"Unlike the grizzly bear or caribou or wolf that were bound together in the waltz of survival before me that late summer evening on the Toklat River . . . we have become so separate from the Earth that we harbor illusions of independence from it. We begin to believe that our survival is autonomous from it. . . ."

"One man remained seated on a chair against the wall in the emptying room of the first ever All-Union Conference on Agriculture and Environment in Moscow; he had waited patiently for over 40 minutes to speak to this environmental journalist, the first American he'd ever met. 'Pajalsta . . . Please . . .'
. . . He opened the sentence quickly and seriously, without the formalities of introduction, speaking far faster than the interpreter could repeat, as her voice became his voice, his concerns becoming hers. 'I live in the southern part of the Soviet Union. We grow cotton there. There is no water now. The land is poisoned. Our children are dying. . . .' His hunger was for knowledge and information he could trust, not the cakes carefully laid out on the reception tables. After a moment of silence, he continued in a whisper.
'Do you know of any ways we can grow clean cotton? . . . '"

It was a kind of emotional crossroads he was used to; the kind that would drive you crazy in the long hours of driving if you thought about the 'wolf thing' too much. It was a kind of vortex that grips man and wolf, spinning the two species closer and defying the gravity of logic. The Wolf Thing intensifies feelings and raises the stakes; it makes those involved seem more than they are in reality: two species, surviving from birth to death in whatever way possible. . . ."
